When Chepyego arrived at a displacement camp in Bukwo District, Uganda, she was malnourished and heavily pregnant.
On November 1, 2025, landslides destroyed the home she shared with her husband—along with their small farm, livestock and food stock.
The camp provided a safe place to stay, but it soon became difficult for Chepyego to eat regularly, as her husband relied on casual labour jobs for work and they couldn’t afford enough food. Chepyego was constantly exhausted, and the nearest health centre was a 2km walk away.
‘I felt so anxious,’ Chepyego said. ‘I was fearful about the health of my unborn baby.’
How a Crisis is Neglected
The landslides in Uganda killed 40 people and displaced hundreds of families, many of them subsistence farmers like Chepyego and her husband.
But the relatively small number of casualties meant this disaster barely made global news, leaving local organisations with the job of providing emergency aid without international support.
This happens all around the world: communities with fewer resources face a crisis that doesn’t grab headlines—be it floods, ongoing drought or conflict—and there’s a lack of funds to meet urgent needs such as clean water, food, shelter and healthcare services.
These neglected disasters lead to secondary crises such as famine, mass displacement, or disease outbreaks, making it even harder for a community to recover.
Helping People Survive in Uganda
That’s why we’re thankful that our powerful God has compassion on all he has made (Psalm 145:9), and for your faithful generosity.
By giving to our disaster work, you’re not just helping families caught up in major disasters. You’re also supporting those who have lost homes and livelihoods because of smaller crises that go unnoticed.
Through supporters like you, our Christian Partner in Uganda provided 1,775 people affected by the landslides with humanitarian aid—including food, water purification tablets, medical treatment, hygiene kits, healthcare services and child-friendly spaces where children can learn and play while living in shelters.
Out of all the people they treated for malnutrition, so far 96 per cent have made a full recovery.
One of those people was Chepyego.
After receiving nutritious food such as fortified porridge and iron-rich beans, her health began to improve. Chepyego was then able to take part in maternal health education sessions and take a more proactive role in caring for herself and her unborn baby. Our Partner also linked her to healthcare services that supported her physical and mental health.
Today, as a mother of a two-month-old, Chepyego feels stronger both physically and emotionally. ‘I feel relieved, hopeful, and grateful,’ she said.
I am more confident about my life and the health of the baby.
A Neglected Crisis in Cambodia
Another type of neglected crisis our Partners respond to is conflicts that aren’t part of a high-profile war, or that don’t carry geopolitical weight.
In July 2025, a border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia rapidly escalated into armed conflict that drew little attention from mainstream media. Air strikes and violent clashes forced hundreds of thousands of people who lived along the border to evacuate their homes.
One such person was Kiry, a veteran living with a disability.
When fighting resumed in December, he and his wife had to quickly flee on his modified motorbike without any other essentials. After moving in and out of shelters, they arrived at a displacement camp with several challenges.
‘The tent provided was too small, leaving us without proper shelter. Access to clean water was limited, and we didn’t have food or hygiene supplies,’ Kiry said. ‘Living conditions in the camp were also emotionally distressing.’
Through supporters like you, our local Partner provided 2,791 displaced people, like Kiry, with emergency assistance. This included:
- Food packages and safe drinking water so families could survive while living in temporary shelter
- Books, stationery, and other learning materials for children to continue their education
- Tents to provide households with privacy and adequate protection from the elements
- Hygiene kits with items like detergent, sanitary pads and toothbrushes to prevent disease and help people maintain their dignity.
Kiry and his wife were provided with a new tent and hygiene items, making daily life easier. ‘I’m deeply thankful for this support, which provided my family with proper shelter,’ he said.
I’m deeply thankful for this support, which provided my family with proper shelter.
