It’s been six months since we launched an appeal for the people of Sudan, after a resurgence in conflict created a food crisis for millions. We’ve been so encouraged by the generosity of supporters like you, eager to help families survive.

Since then, despite the danger faced by humanitarian workers, our local Partner has been working hard to deliver supplies to communities displaced from their homes and suffering from malnutrition.

One such community is Sudanese refugees who have fled to the neighbouring country of Chad. Here’s a quick run-down of the struggles these families face and how our Partner is providing aid, with your support.

Why Chad?

As you may know, civil war in Sudan has made it near impossible for families to produce or access food, and famine continues to spread. Many people have been forced to flee to neighbouring countries for their survival and to escape conflict.

One of these countries is Chad—a nation with 42 per cent of the population living below the poverty line. Chad currently hosts over 939,000 refugees from Sudan, many of them living in displacement camps and temporary shelters.

There are few employment opportunities for refugees, so people have been forced to sell their possessions. This is still not enough to feed their families and food scarcity is at emergency levels, especially for women and children. Malnutrition is one of the most pressing challenges facing Sudanese people living in Chad.

Providing Emergency Relief

Our local Partner is implementing an emergency relief project, reaching 11,250 displaced people in 13 villages located in Chad, alongside supporting locals facing food insecurity.

Our Partner has built trusted relationships in the area, so are well-placed to meet people’s needs. They’re providing:

  • A feeding program for children under five and pregnant or lactating mothers
  • Growth monitoring for all children to detect signs of malnutrition for earlier intervention
  • Identification of people with severe acute malnutrition, so they can be referred for medical care
  • Information and training for carers on good nutritional practices for infant and child feeding.

With your support, this project will improve access to life-saving nutrition services for vulnerable people in Chad, and help prevent death and malnutrition.

God Hears the Broken-hearted

As God’s people, we take comfort in King David’s words in Psalm 34, ‘The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’ (Psalm 34:18). Please continue praying for the people of Sudan, that the Lord would draw close to them. Pray for:

  • Displaced families in Chad—for opportunities to provide for their families, and rebuild their lives
  • For women and children—that they would have their nutritional needs met and recover from malnutrition
  • For our Partners in the region—that God would keep them safe as they provide aid to those in need
  • For peace in Sudan—an end to violent conflict, so that those who are displaced can return home in safety.

Thank you for your generosity towards families struggling to eat and stay healthy. If you’d like to donate again to continue helping communities in Sudan and Chad survive this conflict, you can do so here.

May God bless their work in this region, and provide abundantly for people’s needs.
