When famine was recently declared in North Darfur in Sudan due to ongoing conflict, we were overwhelmed by the response from supporters like you, eager to help.
It’s wonderful to see God’s people giving generously to help families survive this crisis. Even in the darkest times, we know that God is always at work through his people.
Here’s an update on what’s happening in Sudan, how our Partners are providing vital support, and some ways you can continue to help.
A Hunger And Healthcare Crisis
As many of you know, Sudan has been gripped by a devastating food crisis since the resurgence of violent military conflict in April 2023. Now more than 25.6 million people across the country are experiencing acute hunger, with 755,000 people close to famine in regions where fighting is most intense, such as Darfur, Kordorfan, Khartoum and Aj Jazirah. As of September this year, the number of people displaced within the country has increased to over 10 million.
The current situation is bleak, especially for women and girls. According to a UN report, around 84 per cent of women in Sudan are unable to access the minimum nutrition required to prevent malnutrition, and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women in Khartoum and Kordofan states will suffer from malnutrition this year, facing severe health complications during and after delivery as a result.
According to a UN report, around 84 per cent of women in Sudan are unable to access the minimum nutrition required to prevent malnutrition.
Women and girls are also disproportionately affected by the lack of easily accessible water, sanitation and hygiene, with 80 per cent of displaced women unable to secure clean water due to safety concerns, affordability and distance.
Health care is also a major issue. At least two-thirds of Sudan is experiencing outbreaks of multiple diseases, with over 20,000 cases of cholera, malaria and measles. Before the conflict, many families in Sudan lacked easy access to a health care facility and skilled health workers; now the country’s public healthcare system is near collapse.
Providing Aid In A High-risk Environment
Sudan is currently a high-risk environment for humanitarian workers, with 24 attacks on aid workers recorded in 2024 alone. Conflict and access constraints across the country have made it difficult to deliver life-saving supplies to the most vulnerable communities, and hampered efforts to provide ongoing assistance.
Our local Christian Partners have been providing support in this very difficult context, and will continue to do so. Their efforts are focused on the health and nutritional needs of young children and pregnant mothers, as well as providing medical support to address illnesses related to malnutrition.
Our Partner is continuing to monitor the situation in Sudan and the evolving humanitarian needs as the conflict continues.
Please join us in praying for:
- Safety and strength for our Partners and other humanitarian workers as they provide much-needed support. Pray that they would trust God in such a challenging environment.
- Ability for humanitarians to access people to provide nutritious food, essential supplies, hygiene items and clean water for families who have been displaced due to conflict.
- Adequate health care for people who are injured, ill or malnourished, and support for health care workers who are working with limited resources in dangerous conditions.
- Protection and care for those who are vulnerable in Sudan, such as women and children, people with disabilities, and the elderly.
- A peaceful resolution to conflict, so families no longer have to live with violence on their doorsteps.
In confronting times like these, we’re so thankful for the generosity of supporters like you which is making our Partners’ work possible. If you’d like to financially support their life-saving work in Sudan, or give again if you’ve done so before, you can give to our Hunger Crisis Appeal.
