This week, the Federal Treasurer delivered a unique fourth budget of the government’s parliamentary term. Most of the budget speech unsurprisingly addressed everyday Australians’ cost-of-living concerns but a notable detail was also the announcement of a modest increase in funding for Australia’s aid program—allocating a total of $5.1 billion, reflecting a $135.8 million increase from the previous year.
In a global context where countries like the US and UK are cutting back on previous commitments, we’re thankful to see Australia signalling its commitment to supporting our global neighbours, particularly in the Pacific.
Rev. Tim Costello, Executive Director of Micah Australia, called this decision a ‘principled and strategic move,’ reinforcing Australia’s global humanitarian leadership, and continuing to provide for future growth in Australia’s international development program. The announcement also gives Baptist World Aid re-assurance of the continuation and sustainability of our vital work—for which we’re thankful.
Why Government-Funded Aid Matters?
We know our supporters are committed to tackling global poverty at its roots. We witness time and again, God’s people challenging injustice and advocating for wealthier nations to play their role in addressing global poverty. This announced increase provides a measure of stability to organisations like ours. It gives us, our supporters and our local Christian Partners, the ability to continue addressing the multitude of complex issues facing the global community—ranging from humanitarian disasters to the mass displacement of people in conflict zones, such as in the Middle East and Myanmar.
This ongoing commitment should also be understood as a key element of Australia’s defence policy, with strong diplomatic relationships serving to strengthen Australia’s standing as a compassionate and responsible global leader. This is particularly important in the Indo-Pacific region, where development initiatives play a key role in maintaining peace and economic growth.
How Can Everyday Australians Respond To This Budget?
Given domestic financial pressures, it’s understandable that many Australians may not see international aid high on their list of concerns prior to the upcoming election. But there are still meaningful, and essential ways you can support the efforts of those involved in the work of providing international aid:
- Advocate for increased aid – Join and participate in campaigns such as Safer World For All, led by Micah Australia, calling for funding to be restored to 1% of the Federal Budget. Advocacy plays a crucial role in keeping international aid a priority for policymakers. Writing to your local MP or participating in forums being held in key electorates around the country can help champion a stronger commitment to aid in future budgets. Sign up and take part at saferworld.org.au.
- Be bold! Pray about and consider increasing your personal support – Baptist World Aid’s work in poverty-affected and challenging regions makes the most of every dollar donated by our supporters. Every contribution makes a significant difference. Giving regularly as a Child Sponsor, and through other campaigns throughout the year allows for the provision of sustainable development where the need is greatest.
- Volunteer your time and skills – In times like these, increasing financial contributions can be difficult, but would you consider donating your time and/or talent to the Baptist World Aid team? Your Role in Building a More Just World
The budgeted increase in aid funding is encouraging, but the reality is that much more is needed to address global poverty at a systemic level and move towards realising fullness of life for every person made in God’s image. Even in times of financial stress, there are important and effective ways to stand in solidarity with vulnerable communities worldwide – your voice and actions really do make all the difference.
