Sudena* from northern Bangladesh is a woman of strength. She was married at only 13 years old and then widowed a few years later as a young mother.
Sudena inherited a small portion of farming land from her late husband which she tended to diligently for many years, growing small harvests, she then travelled long distances to sell. Yet she was constantly burdened by the questions of ‘How will I earn enough money? How will I keep us safe?’
In 2020 our local Christian Partner launched an innovative pilot program in Sudena’s village with the goal of helping farmers increase their harvests and have access to a local market for consistent opportunities to sell their produce at a fair price.
Sudena signed up for the farmer’s group and has learnt how to make her own organic fertiliser, plant diverse crops, and invest in higher quality seeds. She also meets with other farmers at a ‘collection centre’ where she is now confident in negotiating fairer prices for her produce.
Sudena has doubled the size of her farming land and she’s increased her net return by 75 per cent.
Today, Sudena has doubled the size of her farming land and she’s increased her net return by 75 per cent. In the past two years, she’s used her steadily increasing income to build a new house for her family of seven, construct a toilet, and buy two cows.
Sudena’s dream is, ‘to educate my three grandchildren.’ She also wants to, ‘help other widows because the world is cruel to us.’
