Why Does Ethical
Fashion Matter?

Everyone deserves to live and work with dignity. But millions of people in the global fashion industry face abuse, overlooked rights, unfair wages, unsafe conditions, and modern slavery.

At the same time, the way we produce clothes and shoes—and the endless demand for more—is harming local communities, causing damage to their lands, waterways, even the air they breathe.

Consumers, workers, companies, governments—we’re all part of this system. And together, we can transform the global fashion industry into one that’s fair for workers and sustainable for the environment.

The Facts

Fashion has a big problem.

  • 8 percent of companies are committed to working towards paying a living wage.

  • Many of the 50 million people trapped in modern slavery work in fashion supply chains.

  • 92 million tonnes of textile waste are produced globally each year.

Garment Worker Stories

Hasina

garment worker in Bangladesh
‘They want us to say that they don’t make us work for free. We have to say this, otherwise the company won’t get orders. So out of fear, the labourers don’t say anything … We have to accept this because what will we eat if we lose our job? … For us poor, we cannot be so choosy. No matter how they behave ‘roughly’, we must go there to work.’

I learned to speak English and read English in the literacy program. Then they trained me to become trainer. So now I’ve become the literacy adult trainer. One of my goals is to help women read so that they can read their Bibles.”

Cambodia
I have a disability, so I could not move outside the village to earn money and I lived in poverty. Through the program, I’ve learned how to grow vegetables and raise chickens and ducks to sell in the village. I thank God who motivated me to overcome difficulties in my life, and I also thank donors in Australia who supported me—your love helped a lot.
