17 million people hungry and women without rights

Afghanistan faces a humanitarian crisis as the Taliban regime continues to accelerate economic decline and a reversal of women’s rights.

Right now, 17 million people are hungry and six million are at emergency levels of food insecurity due to a rise in poverty, high unemployment, inflated food prices, and ongoing drought.

For women and girls, the situation is worsened by the severe curtailing of their basic rights, including freedom of movement, employment, education, and healthcare. Female nationals are also banned from carrying out humanitarian aid work, leaving many women and girls vulnerable.

Please join us in praying that:

  • People would be able to earn an income amidst economic decline, and families would have enough to eat.
  • Women and girls would have their rights restored, and be able to access work, education, healthcare, and other essential services
  • God would give our Christian Partners and their local staff wisdom, as they adapt in uncertain times to provide critical support to those most vulnerable
  • God’s shalom peace and justice would prevail.

The heart of Afghanistan is breaking. And so are many of ours across Australia. Daily, we see what desperation looks like as families struggle to feed their children. Daily, we read how fear steals even the basics in life—in only a matter of days.

Decades of a refugee crisis have resulted in nearly six million Afghans forcibly displaced from their homes. The Taliban’s takeover of the government has severely compounded the crisis, with economic collapse leaving two thirds of the country in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

I WANT TO HELP

Your financial gifts can mean the difference between life and death in this crisis. They show the world that God is greater than the crisis in Afghanistan.

Baptist World Aid’s partners are active and committed to continue meeting the needs of those most vulnerable: displaced families.

Your financial gift has been made available so they can continue helping displaced families at risk of starvation. Your assistance will help keep families fed, warm and sheltered in camps.

Our local partners are providing critically-needed emergency supplies and longer-term support for families in Afghanistan. This includes:

  • primary health care focusing on women and children
  • safe pregnancy deliveries, antenatal and postnatal care
  • psychosocial support
  • behaviour-changing activities focused on health, nutrition and hygiene
  • medicines to treat preventable diseases and injuries
  • mobile health and nutrition teams to treat people with malnutrition.

We are also providing displaced families on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan with cash grants for monthly food aid, blankets, mattresses and plastic sheets for winter protection.

Please donate today. Join us as we respond to this unfolding tragedy and provide real assistance to those who need it most. Thank you!
